Leaves & plants

I continue to collect dessicated leaves – often trampled underfoot – and pressed plants and flowers. Photos provide useful source material – preserving details of forms that are often fragile and subject to deterioration. As they age, they seem to me to become more interesting and enigmatic – as do many older people!

Plants in situ

Though I am no botanist, I like to see how plants grow in particular habitats – the diversity of forms and patterns of growth is endlessly fascinating.

Landscape

When walking the moors and valleys of Devon and elsewhere, I come across an endless stream of fascinating, beautiful and sometimes surprising scenes. This experience of walking, noticing and then trying to evoke these special places, becomes a spur to a drawing or painting. A Dartmoor tor, an old hawthorn tree or a patch of lichen becomes a source of enquiry and evocation – trying to unlock what was special in these everyday sights…..
